OSCAR HAMBLIN, a MORMON SHOOTER AND CLUBBER, was 2 nd Lieutenant of the Fort Clara platoon attached to John D. Lee's 4 th Battalion; born in Bainbridge, Geagua County, Ohio, April 4, 1833..
In September 1857, Hamblin was 2 nd Lieutenant of the Fort Clara platoon attached to John D. Lee's 4 th Battalion. On the evening of Monday, September 7, according to John D. Lee , Hamblin was among those from the southern settlements that Lee met some miles south of Mountain Meadows. Following their arrival at the Meadows, Lee praised Hamblin for his skill in handling the Indians. Hamblin is not mentioned among those attending the war council on Thursday, the 10 th , but presumably he was present at the massacre on Friday, the 11 th . He is  presumed to have acted as an interpreter in dealing with the Indians. He was not among those listed in the 1859 arrest warrant.
In the winter of 1858-59, Oscar accompanied his brother Jacob's first expedition to the Hopi Mesas in eastern Arizona and endured the rigors of that trip. They remained in Santa Clara until the early 1860s. Oscar Hamblin died and was buried in Minersville, Beaver County in 1862.
