GEORGE HUNTER, a MORMON SHOOTER AND CLUBBER and a sgt. in the Iron
County Militia; born in 1828 in Devon, Clackmannan in the east Scottish
Lowlands. Joining the Mormon church in the 1840s, he immigrated to Utah
in 1850.
Hunter was one of the original Iron County settlers in 1851. He was listed as a miner from Scotland.
In 1857 Hunter was a sergeant in one of the platoons in Cedar City. According to John D. Lee , Hunter was a member of the city council. Hunter was among those from Cedar City ordered to Mountain Meadows and among those who attended the military council at Mountain Meadows on Thursday evening, September 10. Hunter may have been among the Cedar militiamen who marched along side the emigrant men away from the safety of their wagon circle.
In 1858, Hunter married Mary Muir, from the same region in east Scotland. In 1884, their daughter Roselia Hunter (1866-?) married Henry W. Lunt in St. George. Hunter remained in Cedar City until his death.
